Picking up a new language is not as difficult as you might think. The truth is, you can have a great time learning a new language! A new language means that you have a skill that can be used in so many ways. Consider how much more comfortable you’ll feel if you do any traveling. It’s also very likely that you’ll be able to communicate more easily with many residents of the city or town where you live. You are also required to know another language for many jobs today. The language that is used the most in the United States, next to English, is Spanish.

In many parts of America, many people speak Spanish rather than English. In this environment, speaking Spanish and translating it into English or another language is a useful and marketable ability.

Locate a course offered on CD. Courses on CD are a great way for someone who is shy to learn how to speak a new language. CDs are convenient because you can hear the words pronounced and then spoken in a sentence. The CD can walk you through the same basic learning steps that a classroom based course will use, but you won’t have to worry about making mistakes in front of other people. And with a CD, you’ll be able to practice Spanish if you’re traveling, etc. You can download them to your favorite mp3 player, or simply use a portable CD player and learn while you are on the go! There are no limits to where you can learn Spanish. An important skill to acquire is to practice thinking in the new language. This takes some work, but as you are going about your day try to translate your thoughts into Spanish. You will need to start slow with this. Everyone has a certain amount of “mental chatter” in their heads; when you notice this, think how the words would translate into Spanish. The more often you do this, the better you will be at it. As you practice, you will notice that you can translate words faster. Before long you might find that you are thinking in Spanish without even making an effort to do so. Then, to improve your conversational skills, you’ll want to practice speaking your thoughts out loud.

Flashcards, which you might recall from your school days, can be useful to use when learning a language. Flashcards are indeed a familiar but very effective way to help you remember things. Simply remembering what words mean is really what a large part of a language comes down to, and this method helps you do that. Don’t just use them for simple objects, but also for grammar, remembering the different tenses and other aspects of learning the language. Carry flashcards with you to work, if you take a train, bus or plane or wherever you go. It make it more fun if someone else helps you with them. The process is extremely simple -on one side of the card, write the word in your own language; on the other side, the same word in Spanish.
